Acupuncture
Acupuncture is very effective in relieving acute or chronic pain: especially that of muscle strain and joint pain, pain caused by nerve irritation, and headaches or migraines. It can also be used to regulate the central nervous, immune, digestive and endocrine (hormone) systems by modulating parasympathetic brain activity and regulating the release of specific biochemicals and neurotransmitters.
Acupuncture can have a multitude of effects on your body by:
- Purinergic signalling with the use of ATP and purine within your body for relief of pain, immune dysfunction, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, endocrine (hormone) function, and gastrointestinal (digestive) disorders.
- Its direct effect on the central nervous system, including stimulating spinal reflex response, muscle relaxation and changes in visceral organs. Naturally produced opioid neuropeptides are released following acupuncture treatment including enkephalins, endorphins, dynorphins, endomorphins, and nociceptin for pain relief and non-opioid neuropeptides, substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP).
- Acute changes in brain chemistry by decreasing effects of stress and improving regulation of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis to regulate hormones. Numerous neurotransmitters have been shown to be activated with acupuncture treatment, including, serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, cytokines, glutamate, nitric oxide, and gamma-amino-butyric-acid (GABA).
- Modulates parasympathetic activity for improved rest, relaxation, digestion and healing.
Throughout your treatment plan you may also receive other modalities, if indicated, including:
Dietary Counselling, Lifestyle Modification, Cupping, Gua Sha (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization), Electroacupuncture, Moxibustion, and Tui Na (Massage).

Chinese Medicine
Herbal medicine can be useful on its own or as a compliment to acupuncture. Along with acupuncture, lifestyle modification, exercise, meditation and dietary therapy, herbal use is one of the major pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is especially helpful when treating internal disorders of the nervous, immune, digestive and endocrine (hormone) systems. Many traditional Chinese herbs include a concentrated dosage of those that we use in flavouring our food and pick up as over the counter supplements. Many may be familiar, as there is a fair bit of overlap between western herbology, naturopathic, Indigenous and Ayurvedic herbal remedies in the Traditional Chinese Materia Medica.
An herbal formula may be in granule(decocted), tea, effervescent, tincture, pill or capsule form. These herbal formulations are carefully selected and balanced according to your individual presentation of symptoms to achieve a specific desired effect in the body and to lessen any likelihood of side-effects. All formulas are strictly regulated in Canada to be of the utmost quality and safety for public consumption under the direction of a TCM practitioner. Over the past two decades, a significant amount of research has gone into the biomedical functions of these herbs and our focus is always to provide the most effective, evidence-based approach.
